Growing Roots: The New Generation of Sustainable Farmers, Cooks and Food Activists. Stories and Recipes from Young People Eating What They Sow

In the spring of 2007, I began traveling back and forth across the nation interviewing what I now know is a new breed of young people who, like many in the 60s
And 70s, find passion in good food.  Their sustainable lifestyles revolve around food that has been grown locally, without pesticides, herbicides, hormones, or chemical fertilizers.

I grew up with a mother whose ideas about food were simple: she wanted to know where our food came from, and if it was meat, poultry or fish, what it had eaten and how it had lived and died.  She believed strongly that vegetables and fruits should be organic, grown locally and not sprayed with poisonous chemicals.

In the last several decades our food supply has come under the control of a few multinational corporations.  Genetically modified crops are becoming pervasive. Inexpensive, mass produced, processed food comes at a high cost (most of it hidden) to our health, our communities and our environment.

The young people profiled in Growing Roots live and work across this wide of ours and are examples of the possibility of democratizing our food for all.  Sitting at their tables, I became reinvigorated and enthusiastic again about my food choices.  I hope you find their stories as enlightening and inspiration as I do.

About the DIA Project
Growing Roots introduces us to a few dozen young food pioneers through their words and, even more usefully, their recipes. Think of it as a community cookbook for the food movement

33 IDEAS!, an exhibit of art, writing and ideas
March 15-June 15, 2010

Denver International Airport

DIA PostcardThis exhibit showcases visual and literary artists associated with Colorado Art Ranch as presenters, artists in residence, or Nomads at one or more Artposia. The artists were selected because they use their passion, skills, knowledge, and talent to ask questions and react to the world around them. The work, in turn, inspires us to ask questions and view the world from different perspectives.

33 IDEAS! is on display at the Ansbacher Hall: The Art of Colorado, on the walkway between the terminal and A Gates before the security screening. The hall is accessible for everyone’s enjoyment.
